Sometimes the hair has too much bacteria in it and the only way to get the armpits to smell nice is to shave them. I shaved mine and they smelled a whole lot better. I did let them grow out but shaved them a few more times in hot weather. If he has electric hair clippers he can trim them so they are about 1/2 inch long.
